The Daily Mirror have claimed that Manchester United will not be pushed into offering star forward Wayne Rooney an improved contract at the club.
We in the Football Transfer Tavern think this is a bit strange considering Chelsea are once again lurking.
Jose Mourinho is a big fan of the forward, who he of course tried to lure to Stamford Bridge in the summer, and now it seems that he will once again return for the England international.
As one of our punters quips, Rooney has been United’s best player this season bar none, and the club should really be looking to improve the length and terms of his current deal.
David Moyes and the United board however are determined to show Rooney who is boss and are relaxed about the 18 months that the player has left on his deal at the minute.
Ten goals in 19 games, not to mention the fact that Rooney is once again happy at the club has gone a long way to convincing his manager that there is no need to rush talks.
As our landlord pointed out, perhaps the one good thing that has come from David Moyes getting the job at Old Trafford has to be the form of Rooney, who of course looked odds on favourite to leave with Sir Alex Ferguson in the hotseat.
Quite where Mourinho will turn should his second chase for Rooney fail is anyone’s guess.
