Jose Mourinho remains the favourite to be the first Premier League manager to lose his job this season.
The Red Devils kicked off the season with a win against Leicester but were shocked by Brighton who fought to a 3-2 victory. Further pain was inflicted by Tottenham who ran out 3-0 winners at Old Trafford, piling the pressure on the United manager. Despite a win over Burnley at the weekend, Mourinho’s future at the club remains uncertain.
Adding insult to injury is the reports surrounding star midfielder Paul Pogba. Speculation raged throughout the summer that Barcelona were desperate to sign the Frenchman but the rumours failed to materialise. Now, the latest reports suggest Pogba wants to move back to Juventus after becoming disillusioned with life in Manchester.
If Pogba leaves, United should replace him with PSG maestro – Adrien Rabiot. Valued at £45m by Transfermarkt, the France international was a key player for the Parisians last season as they secured another Ligue 1 title. He made 33 appearances in the league, scoring once and notching five assists for his team-mates. Despite his impressive performances, Rabiot has less than one year remaining on his contract meaning United could be free to negotiate with him directly in January.
The 23-year-old would slot seamlessly into the United midfield alongside Nemanja Matic. Rabiot is capable of playing a more advanced role as well as sitting deeper and dictating the tempo of the game. His range of passing is exceptional – he completed 93% of his passes in the league last season – and Rabiot loves to get stuck in, averaging 1.8 tackles per game last year (WhoScored).
United would receive a huge fee if Pogba does decide to leave but replacing him with Rabiot wouldn’t break the bank.
