Angelo Ogbonna has been a first team regular for FC Torino for the past two seasons, and at 24 is one of Italy’s rising defensive stars. With 5 international caps to his name, Ogbonna is making waves, putting Europe’s elite clubs on alert.
Top defenders are hard to find but Italy is a nation that has always boasted world class defensive organisation, and expert defenders.
Manchester United, Liverpool and Serie A bigwigs, Roma are all tracking the progress of Ogbonna. After proving his worth over the past few seasons with Torino, helping them gain promotion into Serie A, his stock is rising, and could raise an asking price of around £16 million.
Ogbonna would be a welcome addition to the Premier League. I think Manchester United would benefit from another out and out centre-back, as yet again they find themselves playing players out of position to cover their injury prone defenders.
Liverpool have, of late, been toying with a 3-at-the-back formation, and Ogbonna could provide some depth and quality to their squad.
Roma have reportedly formally inquired about a purchase for Ogbonna, but it appears he would prefer a move abroad, to the Premier Leauge, suggesting “English football fascinates me, but the style is similar to Torino’s one. And I speak English.”
He is still relatively young and has plenty of time to build his experience, but £16 million is a big investment. Its always difficult to tell whether foreign players will adapt to the Premier League, but Angelo Ogbonna is a big strong lad, and Italy have a record for producing top defensive talent.
If Manchester United can’t get 2 or 3 fully fit centre backs by January, they may be willing to splash out and acquire one of Italy’s young defensive gladiators.
