The Manchester United fans in the Transfer Tavern are already beginning to look forward to next season following a bitterly disappointing campaign for the club.
Our resident Red Devils have been forced to watch on with a combination of envy and misery this season due to the success of their local-rivals Manchester City. It’s a strange sight for the United supporters who have become so accustomed to treating City as a subordinate club for decades, but there’s no doubt that a shift in power is currently taking place in Manchester.
Jose Mourinho has taken plenty of criticism for his style of play so far this season, but his players also need to take a share of the responsibility for United’s slump. With that to consider, it seems likely that there will be a major overhaul of the squad at Old Trafford this summer to ensure that the dominance expressed by the Citizens this season will not be repeated during the next campaign.
The arrival of Alexis Sanchez in January was a watershed moment in United’s season which many believed would enable the club to kick-start their bid to catch City at the summit of the Premier League table, but after nearly three months at the club the Chile international’s presence has arguably caused the club to regress rather than progress so far.
His performance against Swansea City last week was encouraging for the supporters who expect so much from their mid-season acquisition, and recent reports emerging from The Sun should give them further reason to be optimistic about Sanchez’s future.
According to the report, United are interested in signing Chelsea’s Willian (valued at £28.8 million by Transfermarkt) this summer to replace Juan Mata – a signing which would be greeted with delight by the United supporters propping up our bar. Not only would Willian inject pace, creativity and devastating end product into a side which has often been devoid of inspiration this season, but his presence should also bring the best form out of Alexis Sanchez.
Sanchez has often found himself trying too hard to make things happen for United and dropping too deep to collect the ball. With Willian in the side, the pressure on Sanchez to drive at his opponents and create chances for his teammates will be eased significantly due to the Brazilian’s natural ability to draw defenders towards him and make things happen in the final-third.
Willian’s arrival would be a genuine statement of intent to the rest of the Premier League and also a huge boost for Sanchez, so Mourinho must do everything he can to reunite with his old colleague once again this summer.
