Benitez eyes shock Man United raid for Newcastle promotion push

Despite their relegation, there is an odd sense of optimism amongst the Newcastle United fans in the Transfer Tavern this summer. With Rafa Benitez at the helm, the punters’ pint glasses are certainly half full.

With 6 new signings having touched down on Tyneside, reports from the Daily Express claiming the Toon Army are plotting a shock raid on Manchester United have come as a further boost for the Magpies.

They claim that the North East giants are keen on Paddy McNair, who is understood to have been told by Jose Mourinho that he can leave the club.

Sunderland and Celtic are also believed to be interested in the 21-year old who performed so well with Northern Ireland at EURO 2016.

He emerged as a fairly regular started under Louis van Gaal amid his injury crisis, though the outings dried up last term and he doesn’t appear to have a future in the new regime at the Theatre of Dreams.

Could McNair cut it in the Championship? Let us know below…
