Manchester United should be on the lookout for a long-term replacement for captain Antonio Valencia.
The Ecuadorian defender has developed into a crucial player for the Red Devils after leaving Wigan Athletic in 2009. Valencia’s role has changed over the years with the 33-year-old now occupying a role at right-back under Mourinho. However, he is not getting any younger, and United should be on the lookout for a long-term replacement.
The ideal transfer target could be Real Madrid defender – Dani Carvajal. Valued at £54m by Transfermarkt, the Spaniard has been an integral part of Madrid’s defence since re-joining the club from Bayer Leverkusen back in 2013. Despite his impressive form, Carvajal stated in an interview that a move to the Premier League is on the cards before his career comes to an end. With Real Madrid signing Alvaro Odriozola for £40m, the Galacticos may already be preparing for his exit.
The 26-year-old has developed into one of the finest defenders in the world during his time at the Bernabeu and would be arguably the best replacement on the market for Valencia. Carvajal possesses an excellent engine and loves to bomb down the right flank making him perfect for Mourinho’s system at Old Trafford.
Carvajal is a solid defender, averaging 1.4 tackles and 1.4 interceptions per game in La Liga this season (WhoScored). However, the Spain international is also a huge threat going forward, racking up 33 assists during his time at Real, which will be music to the ears of Romelu Lukaku in the United attack.
Signing Carvajal would make United’s defence complete for the foreseeable future.
