While it was a nervy win for the Manchester United fans in the Transfer Tavern to watch in the end, life is still good after victory over Southampton.
Indeed, our resident Red Devils are wholly expectant of a first title challenge without Sir Alex Ferguson, believing Jose Mourinho is finally the man to deliver.
So, reports from ESPN hinting at a big decision from the Portuguese have gone down fairly well. They’ve revealed that sources close to Luke Shaw have hinted those behind the scenes at Old Trafford have taken up their option to extend the player’s deal.
The England international signed a four-year contract when moving from Southampton in the summer of 2014, meaning it would run out next summer, though it has reportedly been added to with another year.
That now runs until 2019 and, while the 23-year-old has struggled to embark on the upward trajectory many prophesied for him during his breakthrough, it’s news to have gone down well in our bar.
United do need a long-term option at left-back, something Shaw really can be, if he sorts his form and fitness out. Few would doubt his ability in that role and the sight of him progressing elsewhere after so much investment in Shaw would be painful.
A clever move.
