Dodged Bullet: Manchester United and Renato Sanches - Manchester United

Remember Renato Sanches? Well, he could have almost been a Manchester United player!

According to a report by The Telegraph in the summer of 2016, the Portuguese sensation decided to turn down a move to Old Trafford and join Bayern Munich instead for an initial £27.5million fee, stating that he would win titles with the Germans.

“Manchester United made an offer. I think it was well known. But I had other offers as well,” he said.

“I chose Bayern Munich because it’s a great club. They have a 65,000 seater stadium and an atmosphere similar to Benfica. I’ll win titles.”

It was a bitter pill to swallow at the time as the teenager was meant to be one of the most exciting footballers to be coming into the game. But, how wrong we all were (about his talent anyways)!

Despite helping Portugal lift the European Championship 2016, Sanches was a huge letdown for Bayern and was arguably one of their worst players the following season. Admittedly, it would have been reasonable to think that it could have been down to his age, but things have not improved over the past couple of years for him.

A woeful loan spell with Swansea City during the 17/18 season showed that he was well off the pace that was required to be able to play in England’s top-flight and it didn’t do his chances in Germany any favours this season either.

Paul Clement couldn’t quite believe what he was seeing from the midfielder at times, with social media also appearing to have a field day when the youngster passed the ball to the advertising boards in a match against Chelsea (check out the YouTube video below for a reminder!)

Sanches had not played as much as he would have liked this season and admitted in an interview with Sport1 that he was not as happy as he could be.

“No, we haven’t spoken with one another yet. In the next few weeks we’ll talk and then see what happens. I simply want the best for me and my family. I want to be happy; but when you don’t play, you’re not happy,” he said (via Bavarian Football Works).

With his continued struggles, Manchester United must be pretty delighted they dodged a bullet!
