Manchester United supporters in the Football Transfer Tavern had thought that the capture of Borussia Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski was all but complete however talkSPORT report today that the German club have not given up hope of persuading their star forward to sign a new deal.
The Polish international was expected to move to Old Trafford at the end of the season with his current contract at Signal Iduna Park set to expire in the summer of 2014 but Borussia Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp insists that he still thinks the player could stay and is ready to offer a counter offer to the 24-year-old.
He told talkSPORT: “We will offer Robert a good contract but we have to see what the player wants,”
Although Klopp admits that is likely that Lewandoswki will leave, he has not given up hope.
“We must respect the decision of the player and, in some cases, wait. Right now there are signs that suggest we may be heading for a divorce but we will see what we can do.”
Sir Alex Ferguson is looking to strengthen his forward line during the summer and has viewed the Polish man as the perfect foil for Robin van Persie at Old Trafford. The Red Devils also have Javier Hernandez and Danny Welbeck on their books, not to mention Wayne Rooney and the emergence of Nick Powell, but the Old Trafford side remain keen on Lewandowski.
Will we soon see Rooney, Robin and Robert leading the line at Old Trafford? Vote in our polls below.
