‘Ed Woodward should be knighted’ – Man United’s transfer window reviewed

While it was a pretty dull deadline day for the Manchester United fans in the Transfer Tavern, that can’t be seen as a bad thing.

Indeed, our resident Red Devils were delighted to see the club wrap up their business earlier on in this window, even if they weren’t able to welcome a wide player to Old Trafford.

Ed Woodward should be knighted.

Though he’s invoked the ire of United fans over the years, the 45-year-old has managed to steal Romelu Lukaku from under Chelsea’s nose, as well as take Nemanja Matic from Stamford Bridge for an entirely reasonable £40m.

Those two signings alone have looked like having a transformative effect on both Jose Mourinho – who appears cool, calm and collected again – as well as the United squad as a whole.

Matic, particularly, can bring out the best in Paul Pogba – the crown jewel in the project to restore former glories, as well as Woodward’s potentially era-defining capture.

David De Gea’s annual links with Real Madrid came to nothing once more, while the difficult Wayne Rooney situation was handled well after what seemed like years of poisonous build-up.

There’s also the re-signing of Zlatan Ibrahimovic. The superstar Swede will prove a timely boost around Christmas time and his title-winning experience could mean far more than his goals around that time.

Landlord’s Verdict:

Would have been an A* if a wide player had arrived, though Mourinho has been handed the funds to build a squad entirely in his image now.

Out of nowhere, United have suddenly become genuine title contenders for the first time since Sir Alex Ferguson walked down the tunnel.
