Euro 2016 champion hints at Man United move

Southampton fans here in the Football Transfer Tavern are hiding in the booth in the corner hoping that news of yet another departure will just blow over within the next day or so.

Saints captain, Jose Fonte has been linked with a move to link up with his compatriot Jose Mourinho at Man United this summer and has hinted that he would be open to a move to Old Trafford.

Speaking to Portuguese publication, O Jogo (via Sport Witness) the Euro 2016 winner said: “Southampton are a good club in England, where I’ve been treated very well, we have been successful. However, in football you never know what can happen and it’s obvious that if a world class club who play in the Champions League show up, it’s tempting for me. But I state it again, I’m happy where I am.”

The 32-year-old, who has made over 250 appearances for the South Coast side since joining from Crystal Palace in January 2010.

Having established himself in the Portugal squad during the knockout stages of this summer’s European Championship, alongside club teammate Cedric, the centre-half revealed that his success had already lead to informal approaches.

The former Sporting man said: “After a European success, interested clubs always show up and there are offers. Let’s wait for the next few weeks… There are several interested sides, but for this to materialise it, it’s something else.”

He went further and offered up his praise to the new Man United boss, Jose Mourinho, adding: “He will give his best and usually the best of him arrives to make well creased marks. He doesn’t need to prove anything to anyone. If he’s not the best in the world, he’s one of the best. So I am sure he will do a great job. The mere presence of Mourinho makes United stronger.”

Our Landlord reckoned that out of all the departures from St. Mary’s over the last few years this one would hurt the most for Saints fans.

Tough reading indeed for the punters from the South Coast.
