Born in Czechoslovakia in 1987, the 22 year old Slovak has reportedly attracted the attention of a clutch of European football’s biggest names, including AC Milan and Juventus as well as the Old Trafford outfit.
Hamsik made his senior debut in his homeland for Slovan Bratislava, making 6 appearances for the club and scoring one goal. Whilst still only 17 years old, Hamsik, made the move to Italy, initially with Brescia. Whilst being able to establish himself in Serie A, Hamsik’s time at Brescia was mixed with disappointment. The team were relegated in his first season with the club and although displaying some impressive individual performances, the team were unable to gain promotion the following season.
Nevertheless, Hamsik did make it out of Serie B when newly promoted Napoli secured the player’s signature in 2007. He finished as top scorer in his first two seasons with the club and finished as runner-up in the Slovak Footballer of the Year award for 2009. He did however manage to win the Young Player of the Year award. Currently the young Slovak has made 106 league appearances for the club, scoring 30 goals.
His performances for his national team are only adding to his burgeoning reputation, already having earned 33 caps for his country and scoring 8 goals. At the age of 22, Hamsik captained his country in their opening game of the 2010 World Cup.
With such steady improvement over the last few years many expected Hamsik to leave Napoli this summer for a bigger club to continue to progress in his career. It may prove beneficial however for Hamsik to remain at Napoli a while longer. As one of their key players he will be given the opportunity to continue to improve. After finishing 6th in Serie A last season, Napoli are a competitive side with a Europa League campaign to embark on next season. Hamsik will make a move sooner rather than later though despite signing the new contract. If he enjoys a good World Cup and another productive domestic season next campaign then Napoli may no longer be able to resist the offers that will arrive.
