Manchester United would be wise to strengthen their attack during the January transfer window.

Jose Mourinho’s side have struggled in attack with Romelu Lukaku failing to find the back of the net consistently. The former Chelsea boss has also lost Alexis Sanchez to injury after the Chilean suffered a hamstring injury in training. Mourinho hinted that the former Arsenal winger could be out of action for a considerable amount of time which could prompt him to dip into the transfer market for a new attacker.

The January transfer window opens in less than a month, and the United board are willing to back Mourinho significantly.

The man who should top Mourinho’s shortlist is former Newcastle winger – Florian Thauvin. Valued at £45m by Transfermarkt, the winger had a brief spell in the Premier League with Newcastle United but failed to flourish under Steve McClaren’s stewardship. After the Magpies were relegated to the Championship, he was eventually sold back to Marseille. Following his return to Ligue 1, the World Cup winner has been scoring for fun which earned him a spot in the France national team.

Thauvin was in electric form last season, ending the campaign with an exceptional 22 goals in the league. The 25-year-old has started the new season in a similar vein of form, netting an incredible ten league goals in just 11 starts as well as notching two assists for his team-mates. His arrival at Old Trafford could help bring the best out of Lukaku and give Mourinho a world-class option on the right side.

Prising him from France could prove costly, but Thauvin has proven he can score goals consistently at the highest level. Giving him a second chance in the Premier League could prove to be a masterstroke.
