David de Gea is yet to commit his long-term future to Manchester United with his contract running down quickly.
The Spaniard has been the club’s most important player in recent seasons, but his current deal is set to expire in the summer. De Gea was heavily linked to Real Madrid a few years ago, but the Galacticos signed Thibaut Courtois in the summer making a move for the former Atletico Madrid man unlikely. Despite United having the option to extend his deal by one-year, fans will definitely be concerned that the shot-stopper hasn’t put pen to paper on new terms with Juventus lurking.
Should De Gea leave the club, reports in the Sun suggest that United will make a move for Everton and England international – Jordan Pickford. The former Sunderland man has taken his game to the next level since moving to Merseyside, however, United should seek better options.
The only man to replace de Gea should be AC Milan shot-stopper – Gianluigi Donnarumma. Valued at £36m by Transfermarkt, the Italian is widely regarded as one of the world’s most promising youngsters after breaking into the Milan first-team aged 16. The 19-year-old remains a crucial player under Gennaro Gattuso, but his side have been underperforming in Serie A yet again. Given his agent is Mino Raiola, the representative for Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Paul Pogba who both signed for United, a move to the Premier League could be on the cards for the youngster.
With excellent reflexes and kicking ability, Donnarumma would be the ideal replacement for De Gea at Old Trafford. The Italy international is improving with every game working in a squad of United’s talent would only aid his development. By signing the Italian, United wouldn’t need to worry about their goalkeeping situation for the next decade.
