The Manchester United fans in the Transfer Tavern have had to come to terms with another season that has seen their fiercest rivals dominate the Premier League and outshine them in all ways possible. Despite the dramatic 3-2 win at the Etihad in early April, United could only delay City being handed the title as they fell to a 1-0 home defeat to bottom side West Brom a week later.
Despite being in pole position to finish in second place, this season at Old Trafford has been far from straightforward with an early Champions League exit at home to Sevilla and being knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Championship side Bristol City, with their only hopes of silverware being the FA Cup with a semi-final against Tottenham this Saturday.
The most alarming things for the majority of United fans is the form of Paul Pogba a player who was brought in for a fee of £89m in the summer of 2016 for his second spell at the club after leaving for Juventus. Pogba has been heavily criticised for his performances and being unable to influence games, with Red Devils boss Jose Mourinho leaving out of big games such as the Champions League game against Sevilla.
With only 5 goals and 10 assists all season the Frenchman has been linked with a move away from Manchester, and if this was to happen Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk would be the perfect replacement for the 25-year-old. The Brazilian has caught the eye of multiple European giants following his impressive domestic and Champions League form including his sides win over Pep Guardiola’s side in December.
The 7-cap Brazilian international is expected to be named in Tite’s squad World Cup in Russia this summer, and further dazzling performances will no doubt spark more interest in him. After his promising season with his mixture of flair, creativity and passing ability he would be the perfect fit for a sometimes negative United side and take some of the pressure off Pogba, only rated at £17.10m by Transfermarkt it would be a cut-price fee although his stock may rise if he has an impressive tournament in Russia.
