Manchester United

Forget Shaw: Mourinho should focus Man United attention on 32-year-old to fix problem position?

A surprise contender for the left-back position has popped up for our Manchester United fans here in the Transfer Tavern.

Ashley Young has widely impressed our punters since manager Jose Mourinho put him in the left back role and similarly to Antonio Valencia, Young started life as a winger.

In short, Valencia has thrived in the role and made himself one of the best right backs in the game, with the versatility of playing wing back he brings something different to your run of the mill defenders.

The following can be said for Young this season as United have been short in that area of the pitch and with, Luke Shaw either injured or lacking that couple of performances to be the main man, the former Aston Villa man really has stepped up.

Our glass collector says that the veteran England international has played himself back into Gareth Southgate’s plans, while Shaw’s future looks bleak and uncertain at this point.

Over a few pints, our locals have had the debate that Old Trafford boss Mourinho has a decision to make very soon, which will impact both players future. Young and Shaw are both coming to the end of their contracts in the summer and both are able to speak to other clubs come January.

Do United offer both a contract and give Young the role till the end of the season while letting Shaw prove himself or do they offer one a contract and let the other go, United fans what do you think?
