Manchester United lost ground in the Premier League table following a 1-1 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The pressure was on Jose Mourinho following an inconsistent start to the season at Old Trafford, but a run of decent results gave him such much-needed rest bite. Three wins in a row against Burnley, Watford and Young Boys seemingly showed that United had their mojo back. However, a late goal from Joao Moutinho cancelled out Fred’s opener to give Wolves a point.

The result leaves United in seventh place, already eight points behind the league leaders Liverpool. Recruits are definitely needed in January if the Red Devils are to re-enter the title race. Mourinho must surely crave a new centre-back but should also target a defensive midfielder.

One man he should be keeping tabs on is Ajax wonderkid – Frenkie de Jong. Valued at £6.3m by Transfermarkt, the Dutchman is regarded as one of the biggest prospects emerging from the club’s famed youth academy. The 21-year-old has developed into a key player for the Dutch side despite his young age – making 22 appearances in the Eredivisie last season.

De Jong could be the perfect addition to the United midfield to bring the best out of Paul Pogba. The youngster loves to get stuck in and averaged 1.7 tackles per game last season. The Netherlands international also reads the game expertly, averaging 1.1 interceptions per game. He doesn't only excel defensively but also provides goals for his team-mates – registering seven assists last season (WhoScored).

United would face competition for his signature; the Red Devils must ensure they will the race for his services.
