Manchester United have had a rough start to their Premier League campaign, hence the criticism of both players and manager.
Typically United are a club in the spotlight and Jose Mourinho in particular has been on the receiving end of negative criticism, due mainly to poor management but overall because of inconstant performances by his players.
Having suffered two losses already, the same amount as Manchester City did in the whole of last season, United have a mountain to climb if they wish to make this season a successful one.
What really would have made that a lot easier is signing a top centre-back like Diego Godin who they were linked with during the summer.
United’s main source of trouble has come from the heart of defence and their inability to defend this season has at times been laughable.
Godin, (who is valued at £31.5 million on Transfermarkt) may be 32-years-old but is without a doubt one of the best defenders in world football so it’s no wonder United wanted to sign him. The Uruguayan defender stayed true to Atletico Madrid though and remained in Spain after agreeing a new contract.
United meanwhile are struggling with an injury crisis and awful form by every centre-back they have. The assertive, no-nonsense defender would have been the perfect player for United to buy this summer but instead a season of the unknown will now be heading for Manchester United head on and that is a scary thought.
Playing over 350 games for a top Spanish club shows off his qualities and Man United simply have to think about what could have been having missed out on the world-class defender.
