Manchester United fans are in the Transfer Tavern are showing a lot of respect to their 21-year-old midfielder, Scott McTominay, after the midfielder has declared that he’ll play international football for Scotland and not England. The Manchester United academy graduate could even be given his first international caps next month as Scotland face friendlies against Costa Rica and Hungary.
McTominay, rated at £900,000 by Transfermarkt, has forced his way into Jose Mourinho’s midfield despite the quality of his competition for a starting role from Paul Pogba, Ander Herrera and Marouane Fellaini. The 21-year-old started the season by captaining United’s Premier League 2 side before making his first senior appearance of the season as a substitute in the club’s 4-1 win over Burton Albion at Old Trafford in the Carabao Cup back in September.
Since then the Scottish midfielder has gone from strength to strength, recently being one of the Red Devils stand out performers in a Champions League round-of-16 tie against Sevilla a few weeks ago. If McTominay continues playing in the rich vein of form he’s found since the turn of the year then it’ll be hard to justify Scotland manager, Alex McLeish, leaving the youngster out of the international squad.
In the short term however, McTominay will be focused on ensuring United finish the season strong as they continue to fight in three competitions in the hope of silverware.
Here’s what the United fans have been saying:
Fair play to Scott McTominay. Shame he didn't choose England but I'm sure he will help Scotland out a lot. #MUFC

I'm seeing reports that Scott McTominay has opted to play for Scotland over England internationally. That's great news! He'll be well rested at home during tournaments. #MUFC

A wise choice by McTominay if he has chosen Scotland. OK you'll beg to differ that England would provide better development and quality, that's true and one disadvantage. But, it won't be a long road to the senior squad at Scotland.#MUFC

It’s Scotland then! Believe McTominay has made the right decision to play for Scotland Instead of England! Somehow the English doesn’t patience for player dev’t and most often put a lot enamours pressure on young lads to deliver. Lenon, Jenas, Townsend come to mind readily.#MUFC

Scott McTominay decides to play for Scotland, now some English folk are giving it the “He’d never have played for England anyway” maybe not, but surely someone starting for Man United at his age can’t be written off like that?

Good decision by Scott McTominay choosing to play for Scotland over England, Obviously knows he's borderline. Janujaz Grealish took ambitious route & may never play international football #mufc #scottmctominay

Scott McTominay commits to Scotland?
His choice, but shows some character IMO. Less money, but more footy& time for his game IMO. Hope to see Scott developed properly, and who knows what the future will bring. Head down and steady as you go…what you want for a young lad.#MUFC
