Dutch midfielder Kevin Strootman is going to delay all decisions over his future until after this summer’s Euro’s in Poland and Ukraine, an article in The Mirror claims.
The 22 year old, who plays for PSV Eindhoven and the Dutch international team is hot property. He has a wonderful all round game. He has excellent vision and plays a good defence unlocking pass. He also has pace and stamina and is able to make bursting runs through the opposition defence. As you would expect from a Holland international he is comfortable with the ball at his feet and he is also not afraid to make a tackle.
The quality of the player is outlined by the clubs reportedly interested in the youngster. According to the Mirror article Sir Alex Ferguson is known to be keen on the £18m-rated star, but it goes on to say that he is likely to face stiff competition from both AC Milan and Inter.
Manchester United would certainly benefit from the talents of Strootman. The fact that Scholes is staying another season suggests United are really missing something in midfield. Scholes played well but one would suggest that he should be use sparingly.
Carrick was fairly disappointing last season and Cleverley certainly did not live up to the hype. There seemed to be very little threat from the United midfield and in most games they were unable to run the game like times of old. Strootman would certainly bring much needed quality.
Another Premier League side that I believe would certainly benefit from his services would be Liverpool. The Reds also suffored from lack of quality in midfield. To be fair they had a lot of injuries in this area but one must admit that the likes of Henderson, Adam and Spearing certainly didn’t play as well as many would have hoped. I would be surprised if they were willing to invest in another midfielder without a current one being sold though.
With the qualities that Strootman possseses one can see why he generates interest from the biggest clubs in Europe. AC Milan and Inter will be looking to add to their squads in order to challange Juventus for next years Serie A championship and Strootman could certainly help in this quest.
Despite all the interst in the PSV star the Dutch club are not looking to allow the midfielder to leave. Strootman’s agent Chiel Dekker is quoted as saying:
‘Personally, I find it rather difficult for him to leave the club because he only arrived last summer and has a five-year contract.’
The fact that he is waiting until after the Euro’s is a clever move. The reason cited for this is that he is concentrating on the tornament. However these international tournaments have a way of inflating the value of players who perform well.
Reading between the lines I would sugggest that the midfielder is not for sale, unless after performing well in the Euro’s someone is willing to pay through the nose for him. This may be something Inter or AC Milan may be willing to do, but I would be very surprised if Sir Alex would be willing to pay over the odds.
