According to journalist Mark Lovell, quoting from Sportbild (via Read Chelsea), Manchester United are one of the clubs tipped to go in for Bayern Munich’s Arturo Vidal this summer.
Bayern announced earlier in the transfer window that they would consider sensible offers for the Chilean, and since then a host of European super clubs have been linked with the battling midfielder.
The 31-year-old has enjoyed a trophy-laden 3 year period with the German giants, but it now looks as though his time at the Allianz Arena is drawing to a close. Bayern fans must hope that his departure signals the imminent arrival of a world-class replacement, and will also offer the opportunity for the likes of Leon Goretzka and Corentin Tolisso’s roles in the squad to grow.
Vidal to United makes some sense too. He is certainly Mourinho’s ‘type’ and his hard tackling, all action style would ease the defensive burden on Nemanja Matic and allow Paul Pogba more free reign to get forward.
Transfermarkt value Vidal at £31.5 million, but his cost could be offset from United’s point of view by selling on the player he would most likely replace in the squad.
The 28-year-old Ander Herrera has been a loyal servant to the Red Devils since his arrival at the club from Athletic Bilbao in 2014. Often the Spaniard has had to adapt his natural style and curtail his attacking instincts to fulfil his function in the team. He can’t however match the combative relentlessness of someone like Vidal.
Herrera’s importance to the Old Trafford outfit has diminished since the high profile capture of Paul Pogba and the emergence of Scott McTominay. Surely, the purchase of Arturo Vidal would signal the end of Herrera’s career in red?
Given that Transfermarkt value the Spanish international at £27 million, he could perhaps make one more sacrifice on the part of United in the form of his own departure, which would likely raise all the necessary funds for bringing Vidal in.
