Manchester United fans will still be delight Ole Gunnar Solskjaer despite the disappointing defeat to PSG in the Champions League. The Norwegian manager was out-thought by his opposite number in the PSG dugout Thomas Tuchel, but that doesn’t mean he shouldn’t be the man getting the Manchester United job in the summer.
If the ex-Mole man gets the job, though, he will need to address the problems in the Manchester United squad. The main issue comes at the back, as despite having the best goalkeeper in the world in his ranks, the players that are deployed in front of David De Gea are below par. One man who would significantly improve the backline at United, though, is Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly.
Earlier in the January window, the news broke that Manchester United would be waiting until summer to sign Koulibaly, according to ESPN, and if that is true and Solskjaer gets his man then things will only get better at the club. There will always the details that need addressing, however, the main one is the defence and getting rid of some of the subpar deadwood that they’ve been getting by with.
One of the differences from the PSG side that was successful at Old Trafford to the Red Devils themselves was that the French side had a leader. Thiago Silva marshalled amd controlled his backline superbly, whilst the home fans had Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof to look upon. Neither of that pairing is a bad player, but both are lacking in the leadership qualities needed to thrive at Old Trafford.
When you think of the top defenders who have come through the doors at the club in the past the likes of Paul McGrath, Steve Bruce, Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic spring to mind. Koulibaly has everything he needs to emulate those names though and if he can translate his Napoli form to the Premier League then Solskjaer would be hailed a hero, not that he isn’t already, at Old Trafford could become the home of champions yet again.Like what the TT have on offer?
