Manchester United were soundly beaten by Liverpool at the weekend leaving Jose Mourinho with plenty of questions to answer.

The Red Devils were on the back foot immediately and deservedly fell behind when Sadio Mane beat David de Gea with a world-class finisher. United were handed a lifeline when Alisson Becker palmed the ball into the path of Jesse Lingard who equalised before half-time. However, Liverpool continued to pile on the pressure and substitute Xherdan Shaqiri netted twice to secure the win.

The result leaves United a massive 19 points behind their rivals at the top of the Premier League. Despite securing passage to the last 16 of the Champions League, United have picked up just 26 points from 17 games – their worst start to a season since 1990/91. After failing to sign a top centre-back during the summer transfer window, United’s defence have struggled massively – conceding 29 goals in the league already, one more than the entirety of last season.

Problems off the pitch have also plagued the club with reports of a dispute between Mourinho and Paul Pogba doing nothing to solve the issues on the field. The former world’s most expensive player was benched for the third successive game and was overlooked with Mourinho preferring to use Maraoune Fellaini. It seems more and more likely that the World Cup winner will look to leave the club in the near future.

While Pogba’s future is uncertain – Mourinho’s should be clear; it’s time for United to find a new manager. It’s evident that the Red Devils need to reset completely, the former Chelsea boss is now adding to their problems, not solving them. Just like David Moyes and Louis van Gaal before him, he is no longer fit to manage one of the biggest clubs in England.

Whether in January or at the end of the season – the hot seat in the Manchester United dugout should be up for grabs.
