Manchester United managed to secure all three points in their first Premier League game as they fended off Leicester City’s advances at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils have been criticised for not spending enough money during the summer transfer window as they failed to bring in a central defender. But, they still have a number of players at the club that can fill the void, but this will all depend on whether Jose Mourinho can get the best out of them.
Interestingly, United still managed to splash the cash on four players as they drafted in the likes of Dean Henderson, Fred, Lee Grant and Diogo Dalot.
But, one player in particular didn’t enjoy the best of times last season and seems to have lost his way at Old Trafford, but he remains at the club and will do his best to fight for a place in the side.
With that in mind, it’s hard to believe Mourinho didn’t shift this Man United flop…
Phil Jones, who is currently valued at £18 million (by Transfermarkt), didn’t manage to ensure consistency last season as he often made silly mistakes at the heart of the defence. And, it now looks as if Jose Mourinho has opted for a different partnership at the back, as Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly started on the opening day.
Indeed, the Englishman has fallen down the pecking order and will struggle to earn regular minutes at the club this season, so it comes as some surprise that Mourinho didn’t look to offload him at some point in the summer.
