Finishing second last season behind neighbours Manchester City and with no Silverware, Jose Mourinho will have transfer business on his mind.
With pre-season approaching, it is catching up with cross-City rivals Manchester City that will dominate Jose’s thoughts.
He has begun with the signing of Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk. The urgency of a player with the talents of Fred coming into the club was brought forward by the retirement of loyal servant Michael Carrick.
The signing of Fred, however, hailed just the start of Mourinho’s summer spending. The club are linked with a number of players across Europe and the UK, and United fans will be hoping for progress in the transfer market. The brand of football played by Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City will unlikely be matched by Manchester United in the coming campaign, but Jose Mourinho will still believe his side can match them in terms of results.
With that in mind, here’s two deals Mourinho will want over the line before pre-season begins…
The Croatian ticks all of the boxes for a Mourinho signing. Experienced, proven at the top level and ready to make an immediate impact at Old Trafford.
The target man would push Lukaku for his place in the side, or Mourinho might even want pre-season to see if the two could play alongside each other. He’s won an awful lot in his career and would certainly seem like the archetypal Mourinho player should they join up.
According to the Sun, the Red Devils are readying a bid for the striker hoping to fend off interest from Liverpool for the attacking midfielder.
The skilful Swiss Shaqiri would add depth to the Manchester United squad. Xherdan Shaqiri is built in a similar mould to Juan Mata, but is four years younger than the Spaniard.
Jose Mourinho will want the Shaqiri deal over the line sooner rather than later.
