Jose Mourinho would make a huge mistake by benching £45m-rated star against Sevilla tonight

The Manchester United fans have been in fine spirits in the Transfer Tavern since their side’s victory over Liverpool last Saturday, but their nerves are beginning to jangle ahead of a huge Champions League clash against Sevilla tonight.

Jose Mourinho’s side took a huge step towards clinching their place in the top-four this season last weekend as they recorded a 2-1 victory over their bitter-rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford. Marcus Rashford (valued at £45 million by Transfermarkt) was handed his first Premier League start since boxing day for the clash, and he justified his manager’s selection choice by scoring a first-half brace to ensure his side went home with all three points.

Next up for United is another season-defining fixture against Sevilla at Old Trafford in the Champions League tonight. It’s difficult to say which side is the favourite considering the tie hangs in the balance at 0-0 after the first-leg, but Mourinho’s track record in Europe suggests his side have the edge at the half-way stage and should progress to the quarter-final.

However, football is never won on paper, and United’s task is far from a simple one. The fact of the matter is that United have to win to progress, so Mourinho will need to strike the correct balance between attacking and defensive minded players within his starting eleven to ensure his side clinch victory tonight.

With that to consider, Mourinho should certainly be naming Rashford in the starting line-up for the second successive fixture following his goal-scoring performance against Liverpool at the weekend. The quality of Rashford’s performances have been consistently inconsistent so far this season, but his contribution on Saturday was a timely reminder of the immense level of ability he possesses to expose top defenders and find the back of the net with power and precision.

His quality in the final-third is a weapon that cannot be underestimated, and in a fixture where United are likely to need at least two goals to progress, Mourinho would be foolish not to hand him another opportunity to showcase his talents under the European spotlight this evening.
