And according to the Daily Star, the former Netherlands manager is set to be dealt another blow as Juventus prepare a bid for Memphis Depay.
The midfielder’s impressive World Cup has left his future up in the air with many of Europe’s top clubs interested in signing him.
Depay currently plays for PSV and has already scored four times in the opening two games of the season as he continues to be linked with a move away.
Reports earlier this month suggested that Manchester United and Spurs were lining up offers for the 20-year-old but now it seems that Italian champions Juventus are in pole-position.
It is believed that the Serie A outfit are prepared to pay £12 million for the winger – a bid that the Dutch side are unlikely to dismiss.
But it remains to be seen whether van Gaal will now firm up his interest, especially now that winger Nani has left the club.
