The Manchester United fans have been disappointed by their side’s failure to keep pace with their local-rivals Manchester City this season, but recent reports have given them reason to believe the dynamic of the title-race will be different next season.
With ten fixtures left to play, the race for top spot in the Premier League has become more of a case of when, not if Pep Guardiola’s City side will be crowned as league champions. City set the tone for the new season in the transfer market last summer, as they cleared the deadwood and invested heavily in new talent, particularly in defensive positions. If United want to go toe to toe with their rivals and take the title race right down to the wire next season, Mourinho will need to adopt a similar attitude in the transfer market this summer.
United would be wise to also spend heavily on their defensive unit in the summer, but reinforcements in forward positions will also be necessary to keep pace with City. One position which Mourinho should be focussing on is the right-side of his midfield, as he currently has nobody with his squad who can naturally slot into that position.
However, that could be all set to change in the summer according to The Daily Star, as United are interested in signing Willian – Chelsea’s goalscorer at Old Trafford last weekend – although they face competition from AC Milan for his signature. A move for Willian (valued at £28.8 million by Transfermarkt) would see the Brazilian reunited with the manager who brought him to English football from Anzhi Makhachkala in 2013.
Willian’s performances in recent weeks have served to illuminate the immense quality he can bring to the table, as he was Chelsea’s standout performer by some distance against Barcelona in the Champions League last month. Mourinho has tried to deploy the likes of Anthony Martial and Alexis Sanchez on the right-side of his midfield in recent weeks, but both of the aforementioned players prefer to play more central or cut in from the left.
But Willian is a player who is more than comfortable with adopting a role on the right-side of midfield, and the balance he would install to the team would encourage improvement throughout the entirety of United’s team as a consequence. Willian would undoubtedly command an extortionate transfer fee due to both his form this season and Chelsea’s rivalry with United, but if Mourinho wants to close the gulf in class in Manchester then he simply must persuade Ed Woodward to bring him to Old Trafford next summer.
Indeed, if he did land the Brazil star, you’d be mad not to back United for the Premier League title.
