“Legend”, “Golden boy”- Man United fans take to Twitter to celebrate record holder

The Man United fans in the Transfer Tavern still adore their former captain as the club wish a happy birthday on Twitter to the departed Wayne Rooney.

Rooney completed a switch back to boyhood side Everton in the summer after thirteen successful years at Old Trafford. During that period he captained the team and became the record goalscorer for both Man United and the England national team- lifting sixteen trophies as well. And whilst he has faced criticism from some for not fulfilling his vast potential as a teenage sensation and for his off-the-field controversies, his accomplishments in Manchester are difficult to argue with.

He wasn’t as integral to the plans of Jose Mourinho last season- despite continuing as skipper- and therefore made the decision to return to Goodison Park in pursuit of regular football. The now 32-year-old has been part of an abysmal start to the Toffees’ campaign that culminated in the dismissal of manager Ronald Koeman on Monday- following a 5-2 reverse at home Arsenal- but Rooney has already bagged five goals and will hope to continue finding the back of the net under a new boss.

And he’ll surely be delighted to receive a message from his former club on his special day. Here’s how our resident Red Devils reacted on Twitter…
