Leonardo Bonucci and Jose Mourinho are a match made in Manchester United heaven

Jose Mourinho wants to sign a new centre-back for Manchester United this summer.

The Red Devils finished second in the Premier League and also tasted defeat in the final of the FA Cup against Chelsea. It marked the first season that Mourinho ended the season without a trophy during his time in Manchester. The Portuguese has wasted no time in strengthening his squad in the summer window.

United have already signed Diogo Dalot from Porto and Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk but must prioritise signing a new centre-back this summer. Chris Smalling and Phil Jones were the preferred defensive duo last year, but Mourinho wants a world-class option to strengthen his back four. Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld has been targeted; however, Tottenham want over £60m for the Belgian.

Instead, United should launch a bid for AC Milan defender – Leonardo Bonucci. Valued at £31.5m by Transfermarkt, the Italian swapped Turin for Milan last summer in a deal worth £37m. He was a key player for his new side, making 47 appearances in all competitions.

Despite becoming a key player in Milan, the Italian side may need to offload some of their stars due to financial fair play sanctions that cost them a place in the Europa League next season. United should take advantage and lure Bonucci to Old Trafford.

Without a doubt, the Italy international is one of the best defenders in the world and would give Mourinho the world-class defender he desperately needs. Bonucci has experience playing at the highest level which could be crucial in the title race. His arrival would also help Victor Lindelof who has struggled since signing from Benfica.

If he is available, signing Bonucci is a no-brainer.
