It was mayhem in the Transfer Tavern when Manchester United signed Bastian Schweinsteiger during the summer, with the Red Devils faithful dancing on pool tables and the like.
Well, how quickly things change.
Following the news from the Guardian that the German international will not feature again this season, it’s fair to say those very same fans have greeted it with a shrug of the shoulders.
It’s been a frustrating season for the World Cup winner, who has struggled to replicate the sort of form shown at Bayern Munich that made him one of the most revered players in Europe.
He has made just 21 starts since ending his long association with the Bavarian giants, scoring just once.
A knee problem picked up against England has seen his first season at Old Trafford end prematurely, though he may stand of chance of making Euro 2016.
“I don’t think Schweinsteiger shall play this season – I think, next season, he is prepared,” said United manager Louis Van Gaal.
“Maybe he is prepared for the European Championship, I cannot predict.’
‘It is possible, but then that is also in our favour because then he is fit for the new competition.’
Just how badly has Bastian Schweinsteiger flopped at Old Trafford?
