Celtic patrons in the Transfer Tavern are in a jubilant mood following the latest update from our landlord, who claims Manchester United won’t move for left-back Kieran Tierney this summer.
The defender has been a revelation since emerging as a first-team regular last season, going on to notch up almost 50 starts in the top flight despite still being a few months away from his 20th birthday.
Considering the paths the careers of Victor Wanyama and Virgil van Dijk have taken in recent years, Celtic drinkers in the Tavern remain fearful of a Premier League club snatching Tierney this summer, especially after impressing in the Champions League with a swaggering performance against Manchester City and successfully making the step up to the Scottish national team.
According to The Daily Record, however, although Manchester United’s scouts have been impressed by Tierney’s development throughout the season, Jose Mourinho is not planning to bid for the teenager when the transfer market reopens in the summer.
The Old Trafford gaffer is keen to bring in another option at left-back, having been left underwhelmed by Luke Shaw, but Monaco’s Benjamin Mendy – who also dazzled against City in Europe earlier this term – appears to be his preferred target.
It’s added that Mourinho wants a No.3 who can step straight into the first team, rather than requiring further development.
