In a transfer window, it’s always inevitable that Manchester United will be linked with an audacious swoop for a superstar.
Previously it may have just been paper talk but United’s astonishing £89m deal to sign Paul Pogba in the summer shows Jose Mourinho is not afraid to splash the cash.
This month, the two names that have cropped up are Antoine Griezmann, allegedly Manchester United’s prime target for the summer, and Gareth Bale, who continues to be linked to the Red Devils ever single window.
Whilst both would be incredible coups, neither are necessary at Old Trafford and it would be a big step-back on the route they’ve taken in recent years.
If they were to sign both players, where would Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Zlatan Ibrahimovic fall in?
Martial, a £36m signing in 2015, has fallen out of favour in the United pecking order under Mourinho and could well move on, whilst Rashford has been utilised out wide despite his fantastic displays last year- with Mourinho once again failing to trust talented youngsters.
Memphis Depay, another expensive acquisition, has already been shipped-out and defenders Luke Shaw, Daley Blind, Marcos Rojo and Matteo Darmian are all seeing their future hang in the balance- and this is the area United need to fix.
All four of the aforementioned defenders are also fairly recent signings and question marks really have to be asked of United’s transfer aspirations, as they seem to be spending a lot of money on short-team deals.
Whilst Griezmann and Bale would be expected to spend years at Old Trafford, the fact of the matter is they’d push very capable players down the pecking order; and for what? United could spent another £250m bolstering their attack but they still wouldn’t win the league, as their defence is suspect.
So why is it we aren’t seeing top-class defenders linked with United? Surely that should be the focus?
