Man United keen on potential £25m move for one of Europe’s deadliest players

Over the course of the international break, the Manchester United fans in the Transfer Tavern have been debating their best attack.

Indeed, our resident Red Devils cannot get over just how deadly the club’s attacking options right now under Jose Mourinho, believing it to be the best since the Ronaldo/Rooney/Tevez days.

With that in mind, imagine how welcome reports emanating out of Italy have been received today.

According to Goalthe Old Trafford giants are keen on Napoli star Dries Mertens, who has hit headlines this season, due to his stunning role in the Serie A side’s rampant attack. The 30-year-old has already bagged seven goals for the Naples side this term and, speaking to TuttoSport (via Goal), a former Napoli chief has hinted at United’s interest.

Mertens, a Belgian international, is thought to have a €28m (roughly £25.09m) release clause in his contract the Stadio San Paolo amid reported interest from the Theatre of Dreams.

“Manchester United are following Mertens very closely,” former sporting director Pierpaolo Marino told Tuttosport.

“He was an underestimated player until he played as a striker, now that he is a ‘real No.9’ he is kept under the eye of big clubs, because the €28 million clause a a low price, even if he’s 30 years old.”

Landlord’s Verdict:

Mertens is undoubtedly a top class player, though it’s hard to see where exactly he fits in at the moment. Unless someone is sold by Jose Mourinho, the Belgian surely has no place at the Theatre of Dreams.
