The Manchester United fans in the Transfer Tavern have become accustomed to seeing their club lose out on major targets, so we behind the bar have forgiven them for becoming a tad cynical.

Still, even the most world weary of them saw their ears prick up following reports emanating out of Portugal.

According to Diario de Noticias (via the Daily Mail), reported target £27m Joao Mario is heading for crunch talks with Sporting Lisbon.

The 23-year old winger has emerged as one of the most creative outlets in his homeland this season and is believed to have attracted the attention of both the Red Devils and Paris Saint-Germain.

Six goals and a further 11 assists have made the Portuguese international one of the hottest properties outside of the traditional big five European league this season.

Super agent Jorge Mendes even described him as the best player in the Portuguese league.

Now, the player’s father has revealed he will head for crunch talks with Sporting in order to resolve his future.

‘I’m in Luanda and I’ll be back on Thursday, then we’ll talk. Joao has offers but he can stay as well,’ he said.

‘If he leaves Sporting, his preference is England.’

Do United really need wingers, should they be focusing on other areas of the squad?
