Man United move ahead of Euro elite by making £20.5m bid for Middlesbrough target

The Manchester United fans in the Transfer Tavern still standing at this time of evening have been rewarded.

No, we’re not talking about the utter capitulation of arch rivals Liverpool in the Europa League.

According to Swedish outlet Aftonbladetthe Red Devils have tabled a bid of £20.5m for Benfica defender Victor Lindelof ahead of the looming summer transfer market.

The 21-year old was strongly linked with Middlesbrough over the course of the January transfer window, though saw out the rest of the season in Lisbon.

Since then, he is believed to have caught the eye of the Manchester giants while they were running the rule over Renato Sanches.

A raft of top clubs from around the continent are believed to also be in the hunt, with CalcioMercato claiming the list of suitors include Bayern, Juventus and Real Madrid.

Still, reports from his native Sweden suggest the Red Devils are the only side to have made a formal offer.

Do United really need more defenders?
