Manchester United fans in the Transfer Tavern are making a somewhat premature toast to Toni Kroos, amid reports claiming the Old Trafford outfit are ready to revive their interest in the World Cup winning playmaker.
The news comes from The Independent, who claim the Red Devils are ready to go again for the midfielder after agreeing terms but ultimately missing out on his signature in 2014, when the then-Bayern Munich star eventually moved to European heavyweights Real Madrid instead.
But Jose Mourinho is prepared to go back in for the 27-year-old as United’s transfer policy now includes signing ‘stars’ of commercial value – although Kroos would certainly help the Red Devils’ cause in central midfield, especially with veteran anchorman Michael Carrick now 35 years of age.
In that regard, Kroos could be targeted as an alternative to Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann, who could ironically end up signing for Real Madrid despite his representatives reportedly agreeing terms with United in January. The Frenchman is concerned United will fail to qualify for the Champions League, and wants to discover the extent of the Bernabeu outfit’s interested.
Kroos is considered almost un-sellable by the Los Blancos hierarchy, but The Independent believe Griezmann’s arrival could trigger a squad shakeup at the Bernabeu that may free the 74-cap international for a summer transfer.
