Manchester United have been linked with a £70m summer swoop for Monaco’s Bernardo Silva recently and whilst a move for the 22-year-old may be appealing for some, it would be wise for Jose Mourinho’s side to avoid a deal like the plague.
There’s one simple reason for this; Jorge Mendes.
The Portuguese super-agent has his fingers in a lot of pies in world football and represents both Jose Mourinho and David De Gea. United have experience working with him and it’s not really panned out.
In recent years, Mendes has helped orchestrate Angel Di Maria’s massive switch from Real Madrid to Manchester United and also Radamel Falcao’s loan stint from Monaco, both of which did not end well for any party involved.
Jorge Mendes, incidentally, also represents a certain Bernardo Silva and the reported figure of around £70m for his services should have United running for the hills- especially as Real Madrid interest will ramp up the price.
Sir Alex Ferguson didn’t like to work with agents and Arsene Wenger is the same- and whispers surrounding Mendes, who in 2014 orchestrated some of the biggest transfers in the world last summer, always nets a pocketful.
For that money, United could do a lot better than the 22-year-old Monaco man and they’d be spending for spending’s sake.
There is better midfielders out there to target, who don’t come with the baggage that Mendes carries.Like what the TT have on offer? Sign up for more notifications!
