European football is back this week and it certainly returned in style on Tuesday night.
Whilst Borussia Dortmund somehow conspired to lose at Benfica despite battering them for large portions of the game the real story was in Paris as PSG humiliated Barcelona 4-0.
It was the kind of game that surely left those supporters of clubs out of the competition salivating for a return to the premier knockout tournament and Man United fans must be no different.
The Red Devils have been out of the competition this year – having to make do with Europa League football instead – but there’s every chance they’ll return to it next season.
They’re well in the chase for the top four but with Man City, Arsenal, Spurs and Liverpool all strong in that particular battle – qualifying is easier said than done.
United, though, along with Spurs, have a second arrow at hitting their Champions League target with the bow beginning to be drawn back tomorrow night against St. Etienne.
It’s a balancing act Jose Mourinho will have to contend with over whether he prioritises it or the league but surely doing the former would be the better plan.
A win in the Europa League gets them into the Champions League and, when you look at the teams left, United are one of if not the team to beat left in the competition.
They’re in great form, they have the squad and the winners to lift the trophy and with the other top four contenders looking good to carry on their own challenges in the Premier League – this could be United’s get out of jail free card.
