The Manchester United fans in the Transfer Tavern have grown accustomed to rumours linking David De Gea with a move away from Old Trafford in recent years, but recent reports emerging from Spain have given them legitimate cause for concern.
The performances of David De Gea over the years have naturally attracted plenty of attention from far and wide, but if reports from the European media are to be believed it seems fair to say that Real Madrid are by far his greatest admirers. The Red Devils faithful propping up our bar in the Tavern are preparing themselves for their annual dosage of De Gea to Madrid rumours which always manifest themselves within the summer transfer window, however, recent reports suggest they may be spared of the relentless rumours this summer.
That does not imply that good news is emerging for the supporters, in fact, it is quite the opposite. According to reports from Spanish media outlet Don Balon, United have agreed to sell De Gea to Madrid in a deal worth 100 million euros.
If that report proves to be true, then United may well have just surrendered their place in the top-four next season before the current campaign has even reached its conclusion; De Gea’s importance simply cannot be underestimated. The Spanish goalkeeper (valued at £54 million by Transfermarkt) has been United’s most consistent performer in recent years, and he has almost single-handedly carried his side to points which they had no right to win with magnificent saves at the forefront of his contribution.
Losing him this summer would force United to take a step back in their development under Mourinho and begin a new era without their most important player. United already proved last season that they do not possess an undisputed right to finish inside the top-four every season, and if they De Gea this summer they will almost certainly have to face up to that reality once again next season.
The Red Devils have done exceptionally well to keep De Gea at Old Trafford for almost seven years despite the relentless interest from Los Blancos, but now that their resistance has supposedly been breached, the club could be in major trouble next season.
Sergio Romero is certainly not up to the standard of a top-four goalkeeper so United will need to replace De Gea next summer with a world-class goalkeeper, otherwise their top-four hopes could be left in tatters before the season has even begun.
