Manchester United: Aaron Wan-Bissaka was Premier League’s top performer last weekend, says Simon Jordan

Former Crystal Palace chairman Simon Jordan has paid tribute to the performance of Aaron Wan-Bissaka after the full-back helped Manchester United to a super derby victory over champions Manchester City.

While he was unable to keep a clean sheet at the Etihad Stadium, Jordan praised the former Eagles defender for stemming the threat of Raheem Sterling – who he claimed was firmly ‘in the pocket’ of the 22-year-old on Saturday evening.

Speaking on TalkSPORT, Jordan felt that Wan-Bissaka was more than a match for Sterling, saying: “Sterling didn’t get a look-in. He had Sterling, at times, in his pocket.”

Jordan would go on to name the right-back as his top performer from across the weekend’s Premier League action.

He continued: “Aaron Wan-Bissaka was outstanding for Manchester United [on Saturday] given what he was up against which was [Raheem] Sterling, who is an outstanding player, and given the questions that have recently been asked of Manchester United defensively.

“I just thought that he was in the rare art of defending, his defensive performance was as good as you will see a defender defend. He was terrific.”

It has been some week for Wan-Bissaka, who has delivered back-to-back performances of over 7/10 (according to WhoScored’s match ratings) for the first time since the opening weeks of the campaign following United’s victories over Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City.

That should absolve Jordan’s claims of any bias due to the Crystal Palace connection that may leave little surprise over the praise Wan-Bissaka received, while Garth Crooks was among those to also highlight the defender’s recent performances – claiming that there ‘isn’t a better defender in the country on his day’.

After delivering two top-drawer performances in quick succession, there is certainly some weight to those claims, with United’s big-money signing winning the battle against one of City’s own, which could go some way to proving that the former Palace youngster may just be paying off the fee the Eagles received for him in the summer.
