AC Milan are looking into the possibility of signing Eric Bailly as an alternative to Liverpool centre-back Dejan Lovren, according to Tuttomercatoweb.

AC Milan have been targeting a move for Lovren all summer, after identifying the Croatian as a centre-back target for this transfer window.

After Lovren, Bailly has been identified as a back-up target for the Rossoneri. The Ivorian joined Manchester United in the summer of 2016 for a fee of around £30m.

Jurgen Klopp has already come out and said that he is unlikely to spend big in this transfer market, so it is unlikely that Lovren will be moved on this summer, as they would need to fork out and replace the Croatian if he was to leave.

If this is the case, it opens the door for AC Milan to go for Bailly. And losing Bailly wouldn't harm Manchester United, after bad performances from the Ivorian last season, with ESPN describing him as a "calamity" in a 3-2 defeat to Brighton.

With Harry Maguire being chased by the club, who have already had one bid rejected by Leicester City, and Chris Smalling and Phil Jones signing long-term contracts just last season, Manchester United should do their best to sell Bailly this summer, as they have options to deal with the loss.

Bailly struggled last season, making just 18 appearances in all competitions, as he was seemingly frozen out by both Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. As well as the lack of appearances, Bailly also endured a nightmare performance away at Paris Saint-Germain as he was taken off after just 35 minutes.

Bailly struggled massively last season and needs to be moved on by the club. With a value of £22.5m on Transfermarkt, Manchester United could recoup a sizable fee for the 25-year-old which can be reinvested into the squad.
