Manchester United’s defensive shape has been an absolute shambles this season.
The Red Devils have conceded 50 goals for the first time in their Premier League history, pinpointing the need for signing quality defenders come next season.
However, in this transfer market, a world-class defender doesn’t come cheap. Like Liverpool did for Virgil Van Dijk, they might have to end up paying a huge amount for a top-quality signing. Also, one defensive signing just wouldn’t cut it.
Frankly, it’s time for them to move on from the erratic Chris Smalling and Phil Jones.
Rather than spending huge, United can also look to those within for inspiration. Indeed, the Red Devils have some emerging defenders from their own system and Axel Tuanzebe is probably the brightest defender to have come out of their academy.
Despite his injury problems, the 21-year-old’s been a marvel on-loan for Aston Villa in the Championship.
He’s played his part in helping them consolidate a play-off spot, keeping their defence clean while putting in some powerful performances. Not only has Tuanzebe helped the Villains keep multiple clean-sheets, but has also averaged 4.1 clearances, 1.1 tackles, 3.2 aerials won per game, along with a superb 83% passing accuracy(stats via WhoScored) to prove his all-around ability.
The 21-year-old possesses the potential to be a world-class defender if moulded properly. He’s much more confident than Jones or Smalling, assertive of his skills and can mix really well with the confident Victor Lindelof.
Tuanzebe fits into Solskjaer’s progressive methods and can save United from wasting millions on signing other backups.
