Barcelona have made it a ‘priority’ to sell Ivan Rakitic to raise funds, according to Catalan newspaper Sport via Sport Witness.
However, it has been claimed by Sport that Rakitic has no desire to leave the Nou Camp this summer, and would prefer to stay.
The Croatian midfielder’s salary is thought to be too high for Barcelona, and clubs in England and Italy have been alerted.
Barcelona believe, due to the two years remaining in Rakitic’s contract, they can get a good fee for the midfielder.
Manchester United have been extensively linked with a move for Rakitic this summer, with Sport the main instigator behind the rumour, once again linking the player with a move to Old Trafford (via Sport Witness).
After Ander Herrera’s exit from Manchester United and continued speculation surrounding Pogba’s future, it’s clear that the club needs midfield players. And given Barcelona’s eagerness to shift Rakitic to help raise funds for a move for Neymar, these factors could be the reason for the reports.
Rakitic, however, would surely not be a smart investment for Manchester United this summer. Manchester United struggled to provide sufficient cover for their defence last season, as they conceded 54 goals in the Premier League, and they could use more energy in midfield.
Last season Rakitic showed he doesn’t have a strong defensive side to his game. The Croatian made just 0.85 tackles per game, which would’ve ranked him as the lowest among most of the Manchester United senior midfielders.
With the loss of Herrera, Manchester United need to focus on replacing the Spaniard. Rakitic doesn’t possess the traits to be that man and should not be considered by the club.
