After everything that’s transpired this season, the defensive reinforcements quite clearly need to be very strong for Manchester United in the summer.

Indeed, having conceded 50+ goals in the Premier League, their defensive ineptitude’s come into the light, which is pretty shameful for the Red Devils.

So it’s no surprise that Ed Woodward and company are scampering looking for top-quality defenders to bolster their side in the summer. According to reports from the London Evening Standard recently, the Red Devils have reignited their interest in Harry Maguire and are even ready to break their transfer record for him. In fact, Woodward is reportedly willing to pay more than £80 million to bring in the Leicester star.

While a record fee is viable for a proven world-class defender, as seen with Virgil van Dijk, Maguire’s been too topsy-turvy this season to be considered in that bracket. Granted, he’s put in some sublime performances to help Leicester City keep many clean-sheets, but he’s been equally shaky against mobile opposition. In fact, the World Cup actually seems like quite a long time ago for the former Hull City ace.

Frankly, the 26-year-old’s too prone to that occasional mistake and loses his concentration under pressure.

He might be a big upgrade over United’s current lacklustre English core, but not worthy of such a  huge fee. The likes of Kalidou Koulibaly or Raphael Varane (via the Express) can possibly arrive for a world-record fee and actually act as United’s defensive general to overturn their problems.

Ed Woodward’s clearly currently in panic after seeing the fans turned against him, making him desperate to create something big. However, paying an enormous fee for Maguire could soon turn into a humiliating ordeal and come back to haunt United in the long-run.

United fans, do you think spending big on Maguire could be worth it? Join the discussion by commenting below...
