Manchester United: Carlos Carvalhal raves over ‘extraordinary’ Bruno Fernandes as United transfer nears - Manchester United

Former Swansea City manager Carlos Carvalhal has given a glowing recommendation of Manchester United target Bruno Fernandes, who remains in negotiations with the Red Devils.

According to Portuguese outlet A Bola, United and Sporting are negotiating a deal worth a total of €65m (£54.9m) for the 25-year-old midfielder. Speaking on TalkSPORT, Carvalhal had plenty of positives when speaking about his compatriot ahead of his proposed move to Old Trafford, suggesting that United would be getting a player in the mould of Frank Lampard.

He said: “He is a player from another planet, the planet of Portugal is very small to him in this moment, he’s an extraordinary player. Bruno is the best player in the league, he’s miles ahead of the others. He is a complete player, and if you ask me to compare Bruno with a player, I will say Frank Lampard.

“He has very good deliveries in free-kicks, makes very good assists, he’s an athlete. He’s not a number 10, he’s an eight in my opinion, he’s a worker, a box-to-box player. He is 25 years old, he is in the Portugal first XI and he would be a fantastic addition.”

Is Bruno Fernandes the player Manchester United are crying out for?

Looking at what Fernandes has produced in recent seasons, there is little wonder that United have hunted his signature, while Manchester City were also linked with him back in the summer.

Directly contributing to 33 goals in the Portuguese top flight last year (in as many appearances), Fernandes ranked among the top midfielders in Europe in terms of goals and assists (according to Opta via BBC Sport).

He has continued in the same vein this year, seemingly not letting any transfer speculation affect his game (until perhaps when he appeared to lose his rag in a chaotic match against Braga on Tuesday evening), with 15 goals and 14 assists across 27 appearances in all competitions.

That appears to back up Carvalhal’s take on the Portugal international – with the only remaining question being whether he can replicate his recent performances in the Premier League if United seal the deal.
