Manchester United supporters in the Football Transfer Tavern have been left excited by news from Mirror Football that David Moyes is putting the final touches towards his second signing of the summer in Benfica central defender Ezequiel Garay.
The paper suggests that a ‘gentleman’s agreement’ is already in place that will see the 26-year-old Argentine international follow in the footsteps of Uruguayan full back Guillermo Varela in making the switch to Old Trafford this summer.
It is understood that a £17 million price has been agreed between the two clubs as Moyes looks to give himself extra options in his ageing defence following his high profile arrival from Everton.
Former England international Rio Ferdinand may have signed a one-year extension to keep him at Old Trafford next season but he will be 35-years-old by the end of 2014 and will need replacing in the near future.
Garay, who was so impressive for Benfica as they reached the Europa League Final last season, will be looking to oust the former Leeds United man from the first team while doubts remain about Chris Smalling and Phil Jones as they suffer persistent injuries.
