Manchester United reportedly are very interested in Atletico Madrid player Thomas Lemar and a deal might be on the cards as the Spanish club looks to offload the player to fund other transfers, according to Diario Madridista.
The report is claiming that manager Diego Simeone believes Juventus attacker Federico Bernardeschi is more suited to his style of play, leaving the door open for Lemar to leave.
However if the Red Devils try to sign him, there is a massive stumbling block as the Frenchman has a £168 million release clause.
The winger played at AS Monaco before his move to Spain, where he scored 22 goals and provided 33 assists in 127 appearances, per Transfermarkt. He also brings winning pedigree as he most recently won the World Cup with France in 2018 as well as the UEFA Super Cup with his current side and the French League with Monaco.
However he hasn’t been able to replicate a decent goal contribution at Los Rojiblancos, as he only has three goals and six assists to his name in 67 games.
Lemar is averaging just 0.4 key passes, 0.4 shots and 1.1 successful dribbles per game, which is less than both Anthony Martial (0.9, 2.6, 1.5) and Marcus Rashford (1.1, 3.4, 2) who currently play for United, per WhoScored. The Red Devils also have Daniel James, who is only beaten by Lemar in successful dribbles per game.
For such a huge price tag on a player whose stats do not look great, Ole Gunnar Solskjær should steer clear of the Frenchman and either utilise the assets he already has in that position who are performing better, or look elsewhere in the market for a cheaper option.
