Manchester United: David De Gea close to agreeing contract extension

David De Gea is close to agreeing to a contract extension at Manchester United, according to The Independent.

The Spain international stalled in signing a new contract last season due to his demands, however, there is a growing feeling within Old Trafford that a new deal will be signed.

Manchester United were initially forced to take up the option of extending De Gea’s contract by one year back in November 2018 after his deal was due to expire at the end of the 2018/2019 season.

The Spaniard has been attracting interest from a number of European clubs with Juventus, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain all said to be interested.

Obviously, De Gea has been one of the club’s best players in recent seasons, as the Spaniard has won the Player of the Year award in four of the last six years at the club. To that end, keeping him is clearly a boost.

While the 28-year-old endured a turbulent end to last season with multiple mistakes, club legend Gary Neville did say back in 2018 (via Goal) that he was United’s only ‘world-class’ player.

With United still some way off (ESPN) Leicester City’s valuation of Harry Maguire, Manchester United still retain the same central defenders as last season.

Considering there is under a month to go before the transfer window closes, there is a real possibility the Red Devils go into next season with the same options as last seasons. Indeed, losing De Gea as well as potentially not improving the centre of defence could be a big pair of problems for the club.

So, extending De Gea’s contract will be good news for United, especially if they don’t get their way in this summer’s transfer market.

Manchester United certainly weren’t the tightest defensive unit last season as they conceded a club-high 54 goals in the Premier League and, while it was a difficult campaign for the Spanish international, it’s hard to doubt his quality considering his body of work.

With only Aaron Wan-Bissaka through the door in terms of improving their backline so far, securing De Gea’s long-term future is a very good thing indeed.
