Duncan Castles joined the Transfer Window Podcast and discussed what could happen if Manchester United fail to secure a Champions League spot.

It's pretty safe to say that the Red Devils are not really on the level they once were all those years back. Long gone is the team that dominated both English and European football and failure to reach the Champions League could mean more misery.

Castles believes that it would not only be a huge financial hit for one of the richest clubs in the Premier League but would also make it much more difficult to sign high-profile players.

Here's what he said for the Transfer Window Podcast (26/2/2020): "The concern is that that financial power that United have had over the rivals is beginning to disappear. And if they don't... not just remain in the mix to qualify for the Champions League but actually don't qualify for it then next season's financials are going to get even worse because they will lose significant sponsorship money from Adidas. And you also have to question what effect that will have on their ability to recruit players going forward. Can you sell Manchester United as the club you want to come to?"

The situation certainly looks dire for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men at the moment but Man United are sitting in fifth spot, only four points behind Chelsea who are in fourth.

Even though they've had their issues throughout the campaign, a four-point deficit is still not that big of a gap and securing that Champions League position doesn't look impossible.

We're approaching the end of the season rapidly and every single point will count. The question remains - can Solskjaer make the best out of the remaining games?

Only time will tell.
